What is plastic surgery mainly for?

 

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction or alteration of the human body. It can be divided into two main categories: reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. Reconstructive surgery includes craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and the treatment of burns.

Plastic surgeries are also performed in the head, neck and body. They can be mandatory in some cases.    Most of the plastic surgeries involve reconstruction to restore function of the body part, it is often covered by health insurance


Plastic surgery performed on an incarcerated population in order to affect their recidivism rate, a practice instituted in the early 20th century that lasted until the mid-1990s. Separate from surgery performed for medical need.
